Before he came to the Packers, Steve Okoniewski was happy he had the opportunity to play football at the University of Montana. He liked the Montana coaches, too, especially the assistant who recruited him, Jack Elway. Jack had a son, a boy about 10 named John, who used to hang out and throw footballs around at the practice field. John seemed to have a pretty good arm for a youngster.

Jerry Poling writes for University Communications at UW-Stout and previously was a longtime news editor/columnist at the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram.

The media make us aware of the on-the-field achievements of sports heroes, but, in an effort to understand these icons more clearly, Poling writes about a seminal summer in the life of a teenage Henry Aaron two years before he rose to baseball stardom and also looks at the lives of aging ex-Green Bay Packers decades after they hung up their helmets.

Also a fan of biking and golf, Poling has published stories and essays about both sporting avocations.
