Kenny Salwey
(Salwey’s) “conservation message is extremely relevant to the Chippewa River in UW-Eau Claire’s own backyard,” said Daniel Langlois, assistant director of the University Recreation & Sports Facility and a member of the Chippewa River Alliance. “People are not aware that this area of the state from Eau Claire to the mouth of the Chippewa contains the highest concentration of rare and endangered species in the state and a quarter of the remaining prairie grasses. Seventy percent of the state’s fish species are in the Chippewa River. Salwey’s message about the Mississippi is strategically close to our own story of the Chippewa.” -news release from UW-Eau Claire in advance of Salwey’s appearance on campus
Lovers of river ways and the back woods will enjoy hearing the tales that Kenny Salwey has to tell. Self-characterized as a river rat, Salwey has been living off the land and the water for years. He has been on NPR, is the subject of a film done by the BBC/Discovery Channel, and has given talks all over the upper Midwest. Kenny is a living testimonial to the importance of living local, knowing your neighbors (four-legged as well as two-legged), and taking care of the land and waterways.
